In our Junior Kinder room we have children between the ages of three and four. We provide experiences designed to foster language development through social, dramatic, literacy, creative, and sensory experiences. Children are also encouraged to develop their thinking or cognitive skills at these experiences.
We believe in letting the children learn through their play so all of the experiences on the rooms learning journal (program) are either child directed through learning stories or child initiated through their dialogue which teachers have recorded throughout the day.
In the Junior Kinder room we love to do art; the children continuously ask to do a painting or a pasting so our room is decorated with a myriad of wonderful, colourful artwork designed by the children in the room. The children are using a lot of developmental skills during art experiences; for example, when creating a collage they are learning about shape, colour, texture, how to count the pieces, patterns, placement, quantities etc.
It also aids in the development of social skills – the children talk to each other at the table, describe what they are doing, compliment each other’s work, it is a very positive experience for them.
Another thing we like to do is to get outside as much as we can – we love to jump, climb, run, crawl, slide, swing, kick and throw balls, and we love digging big holes and making tall towers in the sandpit.
